If you expand the options for “Sidebar” using the “+/-” button, you will notice that you can paste the ad code into up to 6 ad block spots. If you expand “Banners” you will notice that there is one spot for a “468×60″ banner ad that will show up above the blog posts. So to ad an advertisement, you just paste the ad code into the correct spot. Just make sure that the ad you are using is the correct size for the location you are trying to paste it.

Affiliate Theme Custom Fields

Affiliate Theme uses several custom fields in order to store the post image, conversion URL, button size, and sales caption. Luckily for you, we built these input fields directly into the “Add New Post” and “Edit Post” windows for WordPress.

All of these fields are optional, but you can use them to truly make your Affiliate Theme unique.

In order for you to display these custom fields, several values must be inputted into them, including:

Media – This should be the absolute URL (begins with http://) to your product image. We recommend keeping the image sizes square, meaning 125×125, 150×150, etc, but you can input any image size of your choice.

Conversion URL – This should be the absolute URL (begins with http://) to the URL you are sending traffic to. This creates the Call-To-Action button in your Affiliate Theme.

Sales Caption – This adds a smaller, sales caption beneath the post/offer title. You can use this for a sub-heading on your posts.

Button Width Optional value which allows you to change the width of the button if you are using irregular image sizes. An example value would be “250px”.

Below is a screenshot of the custom panel you will see in the “Add New Post” and “Edit Post” screens in WordPress.

Common Uses for Affiliate Theme

There are many ways you can use Affiliate Theme as an effective moneymaking machine. Here are the most common ways people have been using Affiliate Theme:

Review Sites

Reviews sites are great for buyers who are interested in a niche, but not sure what products to buy. Since review sites usually review more than one type of product at a time, they can have the appearance of being more objective than a manufacturer site, for example. A recommendation for a particular product over another can be the key in a consumer making converting on your lead.

If you are developing a review site, we highly recommend the WP-Post Star ratings plugins. You can find it on our Top Affiliate WordPress Plugins page.

Portals

A portal is great for getting a customer to convert when there are a lot of options presented to them. You don’t even need to include post content or headlines, Affiliate Theme makes it easy to remove the “blogging-parts” of WordPress.

Landing Pages

Landing pages are most effective when you are trying to convert on a single or very few number of offers. Most often, the image and call to action button on landing pages are overly large. Aside from that, you will see as few external links on the landing page as possible, so make sure you remove the navigation when building a landing page.

Blogs

Blog-style landing pages have become very popular in the home business and weight loss niches. Why? A properly setup blog can convey a sense of trust and authority that many face-less landing pages or review sites cannot.

There are several basic, but necessary functions and features we built into the Extra Settings. From this Theme Module, you can specify whether you want your Landing Page Theme to behave more like a blog or more like a landing page.

If you want your Affiliate Theme to behave more like a blog, we recommend that you:

  • Enable Comments
  • Enable Trackbacks

Conversely, if you want your Affiliate Theme to function more similar to an actual landing page, we recommend disabling the aforementioned functions.

Installing WordPress

Before you begin the install, there are few things you need to have and do. You need access to your site and its directory and software to proceed with the installation. These are:

  • An access to your web server (via shell or FTP)
  • A text editor
  • An FTP Client (if you need to install WordPress on a remote server)
  • Your web browser of choice
  • Latest version of WordPress

To install a self-hosted version of WordPress, you will first need to have a domain and hosting. If you do not have a web host yet, we recommend signing up for Bluehost. You can get a domain and hosting for only $6.95 per month.

Once you have signed up for a web host, you can install WordPress via uploading via FTP or via 1-Click installation (only available on some web hosts). If you do not have an FTP program, we recommend Transmit for Mac or FileZilla for Windows.

Once you have your hosting and FTP client ready, you can install WordPress in as little as 5-minutes.

WordPress Famous 5-Minute Installation

  2. Create a database for WordPress on your web server, as well as a MySQL user who has all privileges for accessing and modifying it.
  3. Rename the wp-config-sample.php file to wp-config.php.

    • If you want to have your WordPress installation in its own subdirectory on your web site (e.g. http://example.com/blog/), rename the directory wordpress to the name you’d like the subdirectory to have and move or upload it to your web server. For example if you want the WordPress installation in a subdirectory called “blog”, you should rename the directory called “wordpress” to “blog” and upload it to the root directory of your web server.
HINT: If your FTP transfer is too slow read how to avoid FTPing at:

Integrating Google Analytics

Below, you will find a written tutorial about how to incorporate Google Analytics to Squeeze Theme.

Integrating Google Analytics

  1. One of the most useful things you can do to increase your opt-in rate is to test different layouts, color options, images, etc. In order to do this you must have some sort of tracking software. Arguably the most popular tracking program is Google Analytics. Therefore, we have made it easy to integrate it into Squeeze Theme. The first thing you want to do (if you haven’t already done so) is go to google.com/analytics and get an Analytics account. If you already have one, go ahead and sign in now. Then create a new account for this url you are using.

  2. After you have created an account, Google provides you with the code that you are going to paste on your site. Highlight and copy all of the code that Google provides.

Screen shot 2009-10-29 at 7.46.20 PM

  3. Then on your Squeeze Theme, go to the Main Options panel by clicking on the “Squeeze Theme” button which is the lowest button on the left hand column of the WordPress dashboard.

Screen shot 2009-10-29 at 7.54.47 PM

  4. Next, click on the “+/-” button next to “Stat Tracking Codes” to display all of the Stat Tracking Code options.

Screen shot 2009-10-29 at 7.58.39 PM

Page Layout Settings

When selecting page layout, it is important to keep in mind the niche and purpose of your site.

For example, if you are using Affiliate Theme as just a simple landing page with only a few offers, you will want to select either the 1 or 2-column layout. The 1-column layout gives you the option to use as big of an image and call to action button as necessary on the page. That is why it would work best for a landing page.

That being said, if you are building a review site or portal (for example, ringtones) it would be better to stick with either the 3 or 4-column layouts.

Ryan Wade

It wasn’t until Ryan was in college that he had his first email account and that was only because Texas A&M University forced him to have one. Shortly after going to college (the first time in his life he had been unable to surf and fish), Ryan started trying to find ways to occupy his time.

He registered for an eBay account in 2002, not long after getting his first email account. The thought of making money online sounded too great to ignore.

Ryan’s eBay business took off and he was making thousands of dollars a week from selling his friends stuff and going to garage sales on Saturdays at 6am. At one point, he was averaging a 1000% return on the things he purchased from garage sales. Yet, Ryan was still unsatisfied; he wanted something scalable.

He started his first website in 2003 and then found his current love (internet marketing) in 2004. Ryan knew nothing other than selling stuff on eBay so he purchased every information product he could find on the subject.

Today, Ryan makes a substantial amount of money online and blogs about his experience on RyanWade.com.

Step 2: Choose a Page Layout

Below, you will find a video as well as a written tutorial about how to choose and configure a page layout for Squeeze Theme

Choosing a Page Layout

  1. By now you should have already created a new page, titled it, and created some content. If you haven’t completed step one, click HERE to go back and complete that step first. Now, you will need to choose how you want the page layout to look. So on the right hand side of the screen, under the “Attributes” section:
Screen shot 2009-10-26 at 4.21.09 PM

click on the drop-down arrow to the right of “Default Template.” You should see all of the page layout selections now displayed.

Screen shot 2009-10-26 at 4.21.39 PM

  2. Until you are familiar with all of the different layout options for building a squeeze page, you should test out each of the layouts to see which one you would like to use. To preview each of the layouts, simply select one of them:
Screen shot 2009-10-26 at 4.24.52 PM

    Then click “Save Draft”

Screen shot 2009-10-26 at 4.25.09 PM

    Then “Preview”

Screen shot 2009-10-26 at 4.25.23 PM

  3. Once you have selected the layout you want to use, you will want to configure two more settings under “Post Extras.”
Screen shot 2009-10-26 at 4.40.40 PM

This is where you can choose to display the header of the theme (where the logo and blog title will go) as well as the navigation. When sending people to a squeeze page, these are settings that you can split test to see if it affects the opt-in rate.

  4. Make sure you are saving your draft every ten minutes or so by clicking on the “Save Draft” button.

Step 2: Featured Post

Below, you will find a video as well as a written tutorial about how to setup the featured post for Squeeze Theme.

Featured Post

  1. One of the coolest features of the blog portion of Squeeze Theme is the ability to display a featured post area. You must have already completed step one of the “Setting Up a Blog” tutorials to start this tutorial. If you have not completed step one already, click HERE to back and complete it. The first thing you need to do is create a new category called “Featured” or something similar. To do this, click on the “Add New Category” link to the right of the screen in the “Categories” widget (highlighted in orange below).

    newcategory

Now type in the word “Featured” in the first field that appears in the drop down (highlighted in orange below)

    featured

Then click the “Add” button (highlighted in orange below)

    add

  2. Now you need to upload the image you would like to use for the featured area that will represent this post. For the featured post area, you should choose an image that is 300 x 600 pixels, so that it displays properly. Once you have saved the image you would like to use, you are going to upload it the same way we did before, by clicking on the upload button (highlighted in orange below).

    upload

This time instead of clicking the “Insert into Post” button, you are going to highlight and copy all of the “Link URL.” After copying all of the “Link URL” then close the pop up window so you can see the edit post screen.

    linkurl

You are going to paste the “Link URL” into the “Featured Image Link” field in the post extras (highlighted in orange below).

    postextras

Now, click on the “Update Post” button on the upper right of the screen to save your changes (highlighted in orange below).

    updatepost

  3. Now that you have created a new category called “Featured” and uploaded the featured posts image, you need to select that category in the main options. So click on the “Squeeze Theme” button which is the bottom most link on the left hand side of the screen.

Screen shot 2009-10-27 at 5.57.28 PM

Step 4: Adding New Affiliate Offers

Adding new offers to Affiliate Theme is as simple as writing posts. Here are some general things to keep in mind when using Affiliate Theme:

  • It is best to add all of your offers first and then begin customization afterward.
We all know customization is the most fun part, but it will be difficult for you to properly visualize the design and layout of your page when there are no pre-configured offers on the site.
  • Add only one (1) offer/product per post.
Affiliate Theme is most effective when you input only one (1) offer/product per post. Just like you would write a blog post, the “Post Headline” is the headline for your offer/product and the content area is the copy for that product/offer. You can also assign one (1) main image per post, as well as a sales caption, button width, and conversion URL. These values are all known as Affiliate Theme Custom Fields.

    acai

  • Depending on your layout choice, you may want to display only XX number of offers on the homepage.
For example, if you are using a 2-column layout, you will only want to input 2-4-6-8 offers. Similarly, if you are using a 4-column layout, you will only want to input 4-8-12 number of offers.

For example, in the 2-column layout below, we would only want to display offers in combination of 2’s, such as 2 offers, 4 offers, 6 offers, etc.

Step 5: Customizing Affiliate Theme

There are an unlimited number of ways you can customize Affiliate Theme and we have made it as easy as possible with TONS of built-in header graphics and background images.

When customizing Affiliate Theme, we generally like to go through the following process:

  1. Picking colors and imagery.

The first step is deciding what colors and imagery we want to use for Affiliate Theme. We have included many background images and header graphics for some of the more popular affiliate marketing niches. For example, for a ringtones sites we would use bright colors and a few pictures of a phone and musical notes.

  2. Choosing the right layout.

This can be one of the harder things to get right for new affiliates because they do not know what layouts convert best for their niche.

Generally, if you are building a landing page, you will want to display only one or two offers per page, but with a review site or portal (similar to the Hot Ring Tones site), it is best to include more offers and different options.

The 3 and 4-column layouts work great for review sites and portals while the 1 and 2-column layouts tend to work better for landing pages. See the example for the Hot Ring Tones site, below:

  3. Setting up your Call to Action Buttons to convert.

You call to action buttons are the buttons that appear beneath your main post image. On the Hot Ring Tones site, for example, the call to action is “Downloading Ringtones!” It is very important that your call to action buttons are clear and concise. We have also heard from many top Internet marketers that orange is the best color for improving your CTR (click-through-ratio).

You can also place call to action buttons anywhere on the page by switching your WordPress editor to HTML mode and inserting a class=”button-orange” or class=”button-green” to any hyperlink. For example, the following HTML code, if inserted into your WordPress HTML editor, would produce a call to action button.

    <a class="button-orange" href="http://www.site.com">Link Text</a>

The above code would create the following call to action button example:

    Call To Action Button Example

To clarify, you can insert: class=”button-orange” class=”button-green” into any hyperlink to produce a call to action button from that link.

  4. Choosing appropriate typography.

It is important to consider the target demographic of your affiliate website when choosing font and font size. Depending on how much content you will be publishing on your offer/post pages, you may want to increase or decrease the font size.

When using fonts on screen, it is important to understand the differences between serif and sans-serif fonts. Serif fonts are the fonts that have little tails— fonts like Times, for example. A sans-serif font, such as Arial, lacks these tails. Newspapers use serif fonts as the claim is that serif fonts are more legible. However, on the web, many people think the opposite.

Ultimately, choosing a font that looks good and is highly readable is the most important factor when choosing appropriate typography.

  5. That’s it! If you have not already begun customizing your Affiliate Theme, it is now time! If you have any questions, make sure you post them to the Support Forum.

Step 6: Integrate Email Form Code
